Paul’s Offa’s Dyke Challenge

A local hero from Aberdare has decided to celebrate his 65th birthday by walking Offa’s Dyke for Charity with his National Champion lurcher Brook.

Paul James, ex councillor, ex school governor, national country show judge, countryman, horseman and dog breeder intends to walk the famous Offa’s Dyke over 14 days and raise funds for the Ty Hafan Hospice for Children in Cardiff.

Even though being spurred on by local personalities and supported by ‘Mission Control’ – a team of enthusiastic 6th formers from a local school Paul needs some help.

Paul is hoping to raise interest from both Army and Airforce cadet forces in Wales to accompany him on the various legs of the journey.

Apart from the obvious, carrying the baggage (!), water, dog food, tenting etc the task should appeal to cadets, as the mission would require exercising important leadership skills:

Mission planning, journey planning, logistics, map reading, communications, effective handover between legs, joint force cooperation - all good basic military skills and on top of that the important skill of shaking a bucket at stop-overs.

The charity walk is planned to finish with a birthday party at Chepstow Race Course on April 23rd and will commence 14 days prior from Prestatyn.

The walk will be heavily publicised through social media outreach as well as press releases for press and TV. The Facebook page and website will update frequently carrying pics and video of preparations and planning as well as, of course, the event itself with frequent check ins during each day with ‘mission control’ to update social media and press with progress reports and images. This means that participating cadet units would also gain a good share of the publicity.

This is an officially recognised fund raising event for Ty Hafan and all sponsorship monies raised will be via a ‘Giving Page’ or where in cash from collections, banked to a Ty Hafan account daily. Confirmation of this policy is available on request. The 'giving page' will be available on the official web site www.paulsoffasdykechallenge.wales and the accompanying facebook page. Here you will be able to donate and also find lots of tips and hints about raising money for the challenge.

For further information please contact Ian Bond on 07731087823. Ian will be pleased to discuss this project with any interested group or unit and he and Paul can attend for a ‘briefing’ to help units decide on participation if required.
