Hay-on-Wye Dark Skies Festival - 17-19 April 2015

In the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains

In the Brecon Beacons and Black

The glories of a pure night sky are a sight that few are privileged to witness. The shining Planets, the shimmering Milky Way, bright shooting stars racing to destruction and the wonder of a sky so full of stars as to seem impossible, are things that can be seen from few places – but one such place is not as far away as you think…..

The Brecon Beacons National Park is one of the darkest areas in Wales to observe the night sky. Awarded the International Dark Sky Association’s coveted “Dark Sky Reserve” award in 2013, the park’s 530 square miles offer a huge array of activities from fine dining to pony trekking, from leisurely hikes to climbing the highest peaks in southern Britain and from lazy picnics to enjoying the crisp night sky.

Nestling at the northeast end of the park is the famous little town of Hay on Wye. Remarkable for its bookshops and its international literary festival, Hay on Wye is now hosting their second dark sky festival. Between the 17th and 19th April 2015, Hay on Wye will play host to UK observers and the interested public, offering a range of activities from safe Solar Observing, a Planetarium experience, a visit to Spaceguard Observatory (home to the National Near Earth Objects Information Centre), to displays and night time observing in the company of experts. All this and a plethora of accessible lectures, activities and of course, the cozy comforts of local hotels, B&Bs and Hay’s superlative bookshops and pubs.

All this in the company of those who are eager to share their knowledge and expertise!

Easily accessible by road links across Wales and the midlands of England, Hay on Wye is a welcoming base from which one can be introduced to the excitement, pleasures and rewards of meeting with astronomy enthusiasts and benefitting from the areas dark skies.

We hope you can join us at this exciting festival!
